Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2 – Two Preamps, ADAT, MIDI and Hub

Volt 4 Gen 2 keeps the two Tone Shaping Preamps and Smart Display of Volt 2 Gen 2, then adds the connections a growing studio asks for: extra line I/O for outboard gear, ADAT or S/PDIF optical input, MIDI In/Out and a USB hub. At Soundium it is the expandable Volt.

Key Features

  • Tone Shaping Preamp: Three switchable characters per channel: Warmth (tube, 610-inspired), Focus (American solid state) and Shine (British Class-A)
  • ADAT or S/PDIF Input: Add up to 8 channels from an external preamp for 12 inputs in total
  • MIDI In and Out: Connect keyboards, synths and drum machines on 3.5 mm TRS Type A
  • Onboard USB Hub: Powers a USB MIDI controller and keeps computer ports free
  • Smart Display: Full-color metering with Auto-Gain and Clip Protection
  • 32-bit / 192 kHz Conversion: Up to 119 dB dynamic range on the mic inputs, so quiet details and loud peaks both land intact

Customer Benefits

Start with two mics and a synth, then add a full drum mic setup later through ADAT without changing interface. The extra line outputs feed outboard effects or a second destination, and the hub cleans up the desk. It is still bus-powered, so it can leave the studio when needed.

Quick Specs

  • Simultaneous I/O: 12-in / 6-out
  • Mic preamps: 2, 60 dB gain, Tone Shaping
  • Inputs: 2x XLR/TRS combo (mic/line), 2x 6.3 mm Hi-Z inst (front), 2x 6.3 mm TRS line 3-4, ADAT/S/PDIF optical, MIDI in
  • Outputs: 2x 6.3 mm TRS monitor, 2x 6.3 mm TRS line 3-4, 1x 6.3 mm headphone, MIDI out
  • Conversion: 32-bit / 44.1 to 192 kHz
  • Dynamic range: 119 dB (mic in), 126 dB (monitor out)
  • Connection: USB-C (USB 2.0), USB-C hub port (5 V / 0.5 A), USB-C power input
  • Power: USB bus-powered, 4.2 W typical; rear power switch

In the Box

  • Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • UAD Volt Studio Bundle: LUNA, Topline Vocal Tune, UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection, Teletronix LA-2A, UA 1176, Pure Plate Reverb, PolyMAX and Anthem synths, UAD Lion '68 and Showtime '64 amps, plus Melodyne Essential, Ampeg SVT-VR Classic Bass Bundle, UJAM Virtual Drummer DEEP and Virtual Bassist DANDY, Splice INSTRUMENT, UVI Prisma Producer Lab and 3 months of FL Studio Producer Edition

Ideal For

  • Producers combining mics, synths and MIDI gear
  • Studios planning to expand with an ADAT preamp
  • Hybrid setups with outboard effects

Compatibility

Class-compliant on macOS 12 or newer, iPadOS / iOS 16 or newer (USB-C, or Lightning via Camera Adapter) and Windows 10 64-bit or newer with the UA ASIO driver. Works with Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, FL Studio and every other major DAW.

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros:

  • ADAT, MIDI and a USB hub on a two-preamp interface
  • Smart Display with Auto-Gain
  • Still bus-powered

⚠️ Cons:

  • Only 2 mic preamps built in; more mics need an ADAT preamp
  • No onboard compression or talkback (that is the Volt Max range)

Volt 4 Gen 2 is the Volt to buy if your setup will grow. It is available at Soundium next to the Volt Max models, which add onboard compression and control-room features.
